Fellowship Art Studio Gallery

Fellowship Gallery is located in New Haven Connecticut. This Art Gallery was chosen by me because I often bring my residents here to relieve so stress. I have many times I to fall in the process of making art. Fellowship has a art Gallery that allows people with mental health issues to have art be a part of expressing their feelings. Open art Studio allows people to display and sell their art in a bigger Gallery.
The artist use their painting to project feelings, emotions and wants that socially they have a hard time. The addition of painting around people that understand you and can relate to your weaker points allows the artist to open up more.
My experience with these works at first I was just amazed by how important the work was to the artist. Then I understood that to some this was their only way to express themselves . This is just part of my current job, and it was good to include this Gallery , its special to me. Her is Allens work he makes me laugh ever time I walk in the studio.

Just a quick note to let you know that the registrar's online grade submission process closes to all faculty on Tuesday Morning... I will be doing the grading on Monday morning for the class....

I'll be looking for four 2 1/2 - 3 page papers with photographs and two photo essays with captions....

The Met

It's time we MET, and we have. Last Saturday my daughter, aunt and I visited the Metropolitan in NY, it ended up being a brief visit only because a friend called me last miniute with tickets to a concert, so I hopped on home. But while I was there I was able to discover parts of the museum that I've never been in. SO........ I plan on making another trip on another beautiful day and stay all day so that I can experience it all. What I was able to see was impressive as it ususally is there, check the blog ( AISHA's BLOG) for my 2nd paper. See you there!

My trip to the Bruce Museum

Hi All,

Saturday was such a beautiful day! I drove down to the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, and although the museum was smaller than I expected it was filled with many modern, historical and environmental treasures. The charming museum was situated on top of a hill and there was a nice, welcoming atmosphere throughout the museum. I had a good visit, and enjoyed this smaller museum setting because I was able to take my time and enjoy all the exhibits. I'll post more photos to my blogpage later in the week. Have a good week.

This weekend

This was a very busy weekend for me, I was running around getting my son ready for his trip to Africa; he left yesterday for 2 weeks. I was unable to visit a museum Saturday or Sunday. Hey everybody! I am trying to figure out where I will go this weekend. The Shubert will be presenting STOMP March 17-22 for those intrested. My son will be leaving on Saturaday for Ghana with his Dad, they will be staying for 2 weeks. I know this will be a fun and exciting trip for him; I wish I was going... Fun Fact....

Saw a very interesting show on the sundance chanel.. it was call Who the...is Jackson Pollock.... it was really good. The fun fact is James Wright liked to use his fingers when painting and his finger prints have been found in his paintings allowing for others to be authenticated.

My Trip to the Wadsworth Atheneum

Hi All,

I went to the WA last week, and if I had to rate all of my museum visits, this was by far the best -- the directions were clear, parking was available, and I was greeted warmly at the reception area. I also for some reason was able to appreciate the art on display, and realized all the hard work that is involved in caring for and preserving the beautiful creations. I also found that there was so much history within the museum -- it was a great experience. I'll post my photos later in the week. Stay warm!!

I Want My MoMA!!

Today Tyler and I went to The Museum of Modern Art. It was a great experience. The price to get in for student was $12 and free for kids 16 and under, so my son got in free! The drive to New York was not so bad, Parking was great! Who would believe I got a parking spot right across from the museum; I paid the meter $5 for 2 hours. If you look closely at my picture to my left, you can see the reflection of my son taking my picture. The over all experience was good, but I'm not crazy about modern art; I'll take the old stuff any day. Check out my blog later for my photos and paper. Nikki

Do my schedule, I had to arrange my trip to NY for this past weekend and had a museum filled Valentine's Day in the City! All told, my fiance and I visited the Frick Collection, the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cloisters. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were spent simply soaking in the hundreds of art pieces that NY holds within it's city limits. It was an amazing weekend. Pictures, posts and papers to come soon!!

My Next Journey...

Hey everybody! This weekend I will be taking a trip back to New York on Saturday. I will be visiting "The Museum of Modern Art". I have never been there, my son will be joining me. I always loved New York but never visited as much as I wanted to, this class gives me an "excuse" (I use that word loosely) to go. Someday I want to take the train there, but for now I will be driving; I find it easier because my son gets lazy as the day gets longer, so he can just rest in the car. Well until my next post, hope everyone is having a positive experience. Take care!

Class Blog/Personal Blog

Hi Everyone...

Just as a reminder, the class blog is a place to check in with a short post and a picture to let everyone know what's up with you... each week you should invite us to your blog.  To view your newest post there...additionally, you should create a second short post on the class blog each week about any topic of your choosing that is  related to the class.  For instance, you might have come across an interesting tidbit in some of the links from the syllabus that you'd like to share with the class.  Perhaps you visited something online yourself that is relevant and interesting.

Each of your papers should include the following:

-A first-person impression of the museum itself, would you think of the building and the space?  Who designed the building?  When was it built?  How well does it function as an art museum?  Be sure to include a picture of the building, and in an interior viewer or two...

-Write a one paragraph biography of your chosen artist...this is easy to find on Wikipedia and many of the other sites linked from the syllabus. Put it in your own words....

-What movement or art historical style did the artists work exemplify?  If you were discussing music,  we would want to know was that jazz?  R&B?  Baroque classical?  Another important idea to address is what art came before that influenced the style and how did the style influence art that came after it?  You can find all that and more online.  

-The heart of the paper though, is your first-person account of the artwork chosen.  Yes, discuss the story behind the piece in terms of its symbolism and allegory if there is some...  but more importantly, what did you see?  How big is the work?  What was the medium?  How is the material used?  Where does your eye go to first, second, third?

-How did you feel after viewing this work personally?

-Be sure to include lots of pictures... but overall shot as well as close-up elements of the parts you are discussing are very important.

"The Metropolitan Museum of Art" Sunday, February 15, 2009

Greetings fellow Bloggers!

What a weekend I had, where do I start? O.k. I was suppose to go to the Met on Saturday with my son, that didn't happen. I had problems with my car. On Thursday on my way from the mall I got a flat tire, put air in it and was on my way... Friday after work I took my car to Town Fair Tire to get it repaired because I knew I was going to New York. When I got there I was told that it was not repairable, so I was going to get a new tire, but before I did I asked the guy if my rim was cracked he checked and it was; I had a feeling that it may have been because of a pothole I hit some months ago. I had the rim repaired about six months ago, so I hit another huge pothole a few days ago and I think this is why it cracked again. So to make a long story short, I had to get up early Saturday morning call around for a rim, the places I called had to order it and they would not get it until next week and they were asking $140. So the last place I called said $80 and they would have it on Tuesday, so I asked if I could go to where they called to get it, I got the number and called and the man I spoke with said it would be $60 because it was a grade D meaning not too good. I went to plantsville (near Southington) to Chuck and Eddie's got the rim, it was in perfect condition, better than the other 3 on my car. So I go to Town Fair Tire to try to buy a tire for the rim, but my tires were all mixed matched and too big for my car so I had to get 4 new tires. Anyway, I finally made it to The Met today, I had to go alone because I took my son back to school (Choate)last night. I had a good experience, the hardest thing was finding a parking spot. I paid $5; it's suggested $10 for students but my tires set me back a bit. ...Check my blog a little later for my photos and paper. Nikki

Black History Month...

Just to share/ BIBLE STORIES

Although I know its not on the curriculum..............this afternooon , between picking up my daughter and making it to my practicum meeting, I stopped off at a small gallery / conference room called the Fairfiled Arts Council where they have a current exhibit called BIBLE STORIES. Here are some images from my visit ......... be prepared. These are not your Sunday Church School renderings. What the artist did was take passages directly from the bible... no interpretation needed and illustrated them. I thought the collection was very interesting..... Please feel free to comment. Recession hits Museum

Hello Everyone,
I was just thinking this weekend, has the recession affected Art Museums? I was able to find an article on Livemint.com that discusses how Brandeis University has to close their museum due to the recession. This is incredible to me, however, everyone I talk to are all in agreement that it appears that funding concerning the Arts is the first thing to go when budgets are slashed. The Griswold Musuem in Old Lyme

Ask for a chair!

I found out today from a very good source at the Gallery (a guard!) that you can ask for a stool or a chair, if there is none available, to sit and study a piece. So don't hesitate to flaunt the fact that you are a student studying art and ask for a chair!

Yale Treasure Hunting

The Yale art museum always gives me a feeling of a treasure hunt, you know the stone coffered-like ceiling, gray-ish flooring, very cave like without the work.. well in it I found a few treasures, in the modern arts section. I am not a fan of the traditional stuff, I prefer the abstract except in few cases like the Edwin Austin Abbey listed above. It is a scene from Hamlet , my picture does no justice, but the feeling was so intense. I have a story also to add to the intensity.... I was being tailed by a security guard who thuoght he was slick.... but thats another blog. Anyhoo, I could stand there for quite some time just staring into the details of this painting, it just pulls you in. But the reds are wonderful, they've got this sinister energy. The scene depicted is from Hamlet act 3 scn. 2, in which Hamlet has set up a play

to "play" on the guilt of Claudius for murdering his father..... anyway, you can feel that through the red in the king and queens clothing, the almost fiery lighting in the background, the stripe on the cap of the jester.... so many things that were great about this painting. Its a go see. And of course the Picassos were wonderful too. My favorites were the Seated woman on the red wall, it pulls you right in, the Juan Gris / Journal et Compotier, and Van Gogh's Le Cafe de Nuit, because of the movement and color.

My Second Paper (Wadsworth Museum)

Hello Everyone,

I was in the midst of writing my second paper regarding my experience at the Wadsworth this past weekend. As part of my paper I have reflected on lessons I have learned while visiting these museums.

I think I am really starting to get the hang of the “Museum Experience”; some things I have learned are :

1. Find the coat check, this is a must in the winter, wearing a bulky coat is not conducive to enjoying the experience.

2. Location of the bathrooms, this is important for obvious reasons I do not have to mention.

3. Hydrate before going in as there is no food and drink allowed in the exhibit area or the
museum. Yeah they have those “cafes” inside but have you seen the prices!

If anyone would like to add to my list or give any additonal pointers let me know thanks!

Yale Art Gallery

Hello everyone, I went to the Yale Art Gallery on Tuesday. I took a walk on my lunch break. It's been so long since I've been there, so much has changed. I remember when it was being remodeled; it really has changed. Well, I took a few photos, there is a Picasso display that I manged to get a few photos before I was stopped by one of the gaurds. I was told that all of the work didn't belong to them so I could not take pictures... I managed to get a few. I will be uploading my pictures soon.

Introducing ..............

ME...... yay ( please you're tooooo kind)! ANYHOO, I'm Aisha, an Art Therpy major here at Albertus. I also like to consider myself to be an aspiring artist, I paint and collage ( together and seperate) and whatever else comes to mind, my parents are also pretty artistic. So I try to stay suurounded by these things. Featured above are some of my favorite artist.......I have been to a few museums including the Met ( 1 of my favs) and Wadsworth, taught a few art classes at my local community center, middle and high schools. I also own 1 child ( just joking), I have a wonderful little dancer named Nadirah who keeps me busy. I can't really post a tentative schedule because 3 days a week I'm in Harlem fro my daughter's dance class and when i'm not there I'll be interning with the Creative Arts Workshop BUT what I can say is that I will be at a museum, come hell or high water, once a week, I may even squeeze in 2 a day. I will be posting shortly my misadventures, see you all very soon.

I'm finally posting!! My name is AnnMarie and I am a Junior at Albertus, working a towards a business degree. Wish I was close to graduating, but I'll get there!! I went down town to the British Art Museum today... FYI the museum is only open Tuesdays through Sunday....That's what I get for not checking first...Had fun any way! I have one question with regard to setting up my museum schedule and that is "Do galleries count as museums?" The reason I ask is because some Galleries, for instance the Yale Art Gallery, is really a museum but other galleries are just that -- a place to view and buy art. Please advise as to whether or not some of the "galleries" in the Hudson Valley (NY) area would count as a museum experience and thanks!

My tentative museum schedule is the following:

1/31/09 -- Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven: They will be opening a fantastic exhibition by the name of Picasso: The Allure of Language this Wednesday.

2/7/09 -- Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford: I went when I was a little kid...this should be an adventure!

2/14/09 -- MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA: fantastic installation of Sol LeWitt that just makes you grin! I was there for the opening which gave me no time to explore the rest of the museum -- not the best way to visit a museum for the first time, but this visit will make up for it!

2/20-2/22/09 -- The Met, the Guggenheim, and hopefully the Frick in NYC: I have never been to any of these museums, so I figured that I would make a full weekend out of it and just do it! Is there such a thing as an overdose of art?

My name is Angela Thigpen, and I am a senior working toward a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and will graduate in May. I would like to advocate for those who are unable to do so within a medical/clinical setting. I am a native of New Haven, and am employed at Yale University. I have been married for 25 years, and have two children. My 24 year-old son received his Masters Degree in May 07, and my 21 year-old daughter is a senior at Southern Connecticut State University. I enjoy spending time with my husband (high school sweetheart), reading novels and nonfiction, watching documentaries and shopping. I enjoy exploring and taking in God's beautiful creations, and look forward to visiting the museum's listed to appreciate the gift of art.

I can tell you that this weekend I will be in Portland Maine and plan on attending a Rock n Roll Photography exhibit. First Week Expectations

In this first week of class, I'd like you to post twice to the blog... the first post a hello and introduction like Tara and Ryan have done... and the second post to be an invitation to view the personal blog you have set up apart from this one... be sure to post a link to it so we can find you...

For your first post to your blog, give us a tentatifve schedule of your museum outings...  This will help you to committ to the process of going out to them and help with family or personal planning over the next 7 weeks...

Of course you can get started on your visits right away...  Remember to take your time and really make a personal committment to engaging with a piece in each museum to go into more depth on for your blog post....
